Chelsea Plant of Year 2023
There’s nothing better than a large Agapanthus in full flower at the height of summer, creating an eruption of the deepest, darkest purple. The ‘Black Jack’ is a dramatic perennial which showcases incredible flowerheads, filled with black buds that open to reveal black-purple flowers. Over time, these will fade to deep purple. The black buds are a wonderful contrast to the striped, purple flowers, which develop a metallic sheen over time.
Agapanthus are the perfect plant for an ornate container and with a little care, will last you a lifetime. Even before the 1m flower stems appear, the bright green strap life leaves are a lovely sight and heighten the expectation of the blooms to come from mid-summer. Agapanthus do best when their roots are restricted so don’t be tempted to pot into too large a container – just a little wider than the nursery pot they arrive in will be fine.
Place in a sunny spot and enjoy this African native in your garden over summer!
Supplied in a 9cm pot.
Care Information
In colder parts of the UK, cover the crown of the plant with a deep, dry mulch to protect the plants from hard frosts, or grow in a pot so they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
